Do unto others …

Yesterday started out like a loser all around. I was tired from having not slept much, and the pollen count was making me sad. I dragged myself out of the house to go do my thing anyway.

For the first couple of hours, I didn’t earn much. I’m pretty sure my performance was off (I even yawned a few times during songs). I took a break, collected myself, drank some water, and went back at it just after the number of school children (on the train) dropped.

With a few stops left before my turn-around point, I was playing a car that was pretty well populated when a blind man walked in from the car behind me. This was no fake. This guy literally had no eyes. I watched as he made around 20 bucks. I gave him a dollar out of my pocket, and prepared to get off the train having lost a perfectly good performance.

A woman who gave the blind man a few dollars tapped me on the shoulder. As I turned to her, she gave me a dollar thanking me for the the song  (Secret Agent Man .. Johnny Rivers version), and saying she was touched by my tipping the blind man.

… as you would have them do unto you.

Do I Need A Permit?

“What permit do I need to busk in New York City?”

I get this question all the time. No one ever expects the answer I give. I asked the same question of gHSTS n gUITARS back in the day and got the same answer in essense.

What is to physically stop you from getting on a train, or setting up on a subway platform or mezzanine, or sitting on a park bench, or standing on a street corner and performing? Nothing. You can do any or all of these things pretty much at will with no physical barriers. In essence, this means you don’t actually “need” a permit.

Three things are technically illegal. Playing on a the train (with or without an amplifier), using an amplifier on a subway platform. No permits are available for either of these things. These are the two most common (and successful) forms of busking in the entirety of New York City. There’s not much money on the mezzanines, and acoustic performances get lost in the noise on subway platforms.

Street permits come at a price per day, and have crowd-size limits, and MUNY permits that allow you to play in really prime spots are extremely hard to get (unless you’re related to or otherwise involved with someone who works on that comittee).

Do you “need” a permit. I say no.

… And A Ring:

Another day at the office on Wednesday. Took to the rails with Katty F, and the dreaded Jingle Bucket. Stuck to familiar lines, and made at least one drastic line change in response to slow earnings on a previous line. We ended up with an average take … and a ring (not by accident. this was our tip) that turned out to be silver with a mounted CZ (pictured below) …

Be Not Discouraged …

May has started off as a slow month for me. These things happen but I tend to worry about them anyway. I just had two abysmal days out of a 5-day week (I’m off this weekend). I can only hope that the next three days (today included) improve drastically. I made sure I got a decent night’s sleep, and am about to prepare for the day. Wish me luck.
